Home Sweet Home
“Well Ashley this seems like it’s going to be our last time up here.
“Yeah I know what you mean. We have spent almost 15 years up here in this attic.”
I cut her off and say “no it’s our Get Away Place.”
We sat and stared at the cold wood floor. For what seemed like forever, but was only for a few minutes. We got up looked out the window at the huge Oak tree in the back yard. Standing as tall as in can be like it was looking right back at us. I look down and saw a broken branch.
“Ok get out! It’s my turn “, I hear Ashley scream at me over and over.
“The oldest gets to ride longer,” I yelled back.
“We are both eleven now get out!” Ashley screamed.
So I climbed out the tire swing on the old Oak tree. I turn my head for a few split seconds. And I hear this huge break. I turn back towards the tree. To see Ashley lying face up on the ground. With the tire still wrapped around her waist. Like a blanket on a cold winter day. The rope still tied to the broken branch. I walked over to her and kicked her foot.
“Why are kicking me?” she asked me.
“I’m trying to see if you ok. Because you are just laying there not moving you know.”
“Well I did just fall out of a freaking tree you know.” She said back.
“Yes I see you have. So are you ok.”
“Yeah I just got the wind knocked out of me,” she said in a very shallow voice. As if she was trying to catch her breath after you come from under water.
Still looking out the window, I see Mia and her younger brother playing catch with a baseball on the sidewalk. And I laugh to myself as I picture Ashley’s mom, running out the house like it was on fire with the baseball in her hand.
“Which one of you threw this ball and broke my window?”
Me and Ashley both looking like we just saw a ghost. I hand Ashley the bat and we both say “She did it!” at the same time. And run to the backyard to hide behind a tree.
As tears began to form in my eyes I quickly turned around so Ashley wouldn’t see. I feel something hard on the bottom of my shoe. I look down and I’m stepping on a cord to an old TV.
            “What did you just do?”
I look over and Ashley is standing in the doorway of her room. And here is her TV lying on the carpet face down.
She asked me again “What did you just do?” and I quietly say.
“I was trying to pull the TV up some more on the wall. It just jumped off the wall.”
            “TV’s don’t just jump off of a wall Ke’Airria.”
“Well this one just did. I guess it didn’t like being up so high. I’m surprised it didn’t break into pieces.
“Yes you better be glad my momma would have killed you.”
“You right I could see that coming now.”
We both let out very loud giggles.
            “Ke’Airria! Ke’Airria!” I hear Ashley calling me.
And I come back down to earth.
“Come on and help me get the last few boxes, out my room and the living room. We’re sown to the last two big boxes.
I tell Ashley “Hurry up and walk faster this box is heavy you know.”
All the boxes are all gone and packed into the moving truck. I look up to the attic window.
And say to Ashley “these fifth teen years at this house have been a rollercoaster ride.”
            “Yes so many memories.”
“Well I’m truly going to miss this house.”
